Description

The Art Deco district of Miami Beach has inspired a stunning new vase from the Moorcroft Pottery in England. Deco Drive is a ten inch tall, limited edition vase featuring the fantastic Miami Beach buildings of the 1920s, fringed with palm trees and pelicans. Sunrise-patterned windows, abstract geometric detailing and vibrant colors defined the architecture of this tropical playground during the Jazz age.

Designer Philip Gibson visited Florida in 2006 to demonstrate the art of making Moorcroft at the West Palm Beach show. He was so impressed by the Art Deco hotels on Ocean Drive that he incorporated the iconic details into a vase design and added the natural beauty of Florida: the brilliant blue sky and ocean; the lush tropical foliage; and the pelicans which are a familiar sight along the shoreline. The pelicans in the Deco Drive design have a heraldic appearance, reminiscent of the bird's medieval symbolism. Pelicans were also popular motifs in Art Deco design, highly stylized yet instantly recognizable.

Moorcroft's special decorating technique of tube-lining and hand-painting is ideally suited to the bold lines and curves of Art Deco design and Philip Gibson's vase is a spectacular tribute to Miami Beach style. The Deco Drive vase was commissioned by the Miami-based Moorcroft specialist, Pascoe and Company, and it will be launched at the 2009 West Palm Beach show from January 30th to February 2nd. The limited edition is just 50 vases so an early sell-out is anticipated. You can pre-order the vase now to avoid disappointment later.
