Royal Doulton Character Jugs, which are also known as mugs or tobies, were the brainwave of art director, Charles Noke. Inspired by traditional English toby jugs and even earlier cups modeled in the form of human beings, Noke devised a series of Character Jugs, featuring the head and shoulders of famous people. He also determined the standard sizes - large (5 ¼ -7 ½ inches), small (3 ¼ - 4 inches), miniature (2 ¼ - 2 ½ inches) and tinies (around 1 ¼ inches).
